The contract was signed last week on 16th January to build the 4e Gymnasium in Amsterdam. Dura Vermeer, Wolter & Dros en Croon will start building the school in March 2015. The new building will be put into use in the summer of 2016.
The design is by Architectenbureau Paul de Ruiter and Van Rossum is proud to have collaborated on this project.
The Houthaven, an area of approx. 30 hectares, will become a lively, urban area consisting of islands and a variety of buildings and residents. It will also be the first energy neutral borough of Amsterdam with the 4e Gymnasium on Houthavenweg entirely in keeping with this sustainable vision.
The emphasis at the 4e Gymnasium will be on artistic and cultural education. Subjects like film, drama, painting and drawing will also be taught. As well as the usual class rooms, there will also be a theatre, cinema, studio and laboratory.
Energy neutral, ‘fresh’ school
The 4e Gymnasium will be a class B ‘Fresh School’ [Frisse School], which means that an optimum indoor climate will be guaranteed. Concrete Core Activation will be applied and the building will be connected to the Houthaven area’s heating supply. The building will be insulated with high quality triple glazing and electricity will be generated on the roof by photovoltaic cells.
The outer wall will be made up of various yellow, orange and red coloured grains. The grains, which will also differ in length, breadth and depth, will consist of transparent and coloured, enamel glass and will be enclosed by a sun-resistant wooden frame. There will also be two gyms on the top floor with a separate entrance so that they can also be used outside school hours.
It is expected that the optimum indoor climate will have a positive effect on the performance of both pupils and staff.
